I know I've been away from this board for forever, but hopefully before the year is out I'll be posting once again. I hope you enjoy this short fic.

L.A. proved too much for the man
So he's leavin' the life he's come to know
He said he's goin' back to find what's left of his world
The world he left behind not so long ago

She looked in the mirror and saw more and more grey hairs. Fifty was quickly approaching, which was just a hop, skip, and a jump from sixty. Then more than half her life would be over. She was in a cheerful mood today. Usually her aging didn't bother her. She didn't bother dyeing her grey hairs because of her grandmother's words - - the alternative to growing old…dying young. Every grey hair and wrinkle was appreciated.

No her depressing thoughts began when her youngest son asked for a daddy that lived with them, not just one he saw every other weekend and a few nights a week. Out of the corner of her eye, she had seen her youngest daughter nod her head in agreement. She explained to them that in God's perfect timing He would send her a husband, until then they had better keep praying. Her answer seemed to have satisfied them and off to bed they went.

But here she sat in front of her mirror wondering where on the earth would she meet an eligible man that wasn't insane, wasn't intimated by her, wanted to spend his fifties and sixties raising kids, didn't want any kids of his own, and was okay with becoming an instant grandfather and father of four. Was the Easter Bunny single? Because this man, who on top of all that, had to be funny, smart, loving, kind, generous, hardworking, and not easily pushed around, didn't exist. He simply didn't exist.

He's leavin' on that midnight train to Georgia
Said he's goin' back to find the simpler place and time
I'll be with him on that midnight train to Georgia
I'd rather live in his world than live without him in mine

He existed. He existed. Her kids must have been doing a lot of praying. Who would have thought she would meet the man of her dreams at a boring gala? Or in such a comical, yet considerate way? She had been woman number thirty standing in line to use the restroom when a hand tapped her shoulder and motioned for her to come hither. She had been surprised to see who the tapper was. They had never spoken socially before, but she followed him and was quite impressed when he offered to stand guard while she used the empty men's room. When she had emerged from the bathroom the rest of the evening had been enchanting. They got drinks, went outside and just talked. She was amazed at all they had in common. They had both grown-up in working middle-class families, where their parents had stayed (to) together for the sake of the kids and later divorced once everyone was out of the house. They had the same taste in books, politics, religion. They discussed the taboos you were never supposed to talk about and even when they disagreed, their arguments were intelligent and fun.

What had started out as a mind-numbing night had ended with her being escorted home wearing his jacket, because her shawl had been declared too flimsy, a kiss on the cheek, and a promise to talk later. Six short hours later, she had awakened to the sound of his voice.

He wasn't her usual type and maybe that was a good thing since she had no luck in keeping her relationships together with her type. The more time she spent with him, the more she realized she was a meat and potatoes girl and before him she had been with lobster and caviar men, when what she really needed and craved was another meat and potatoes person. Well she found that in him and she was happier than she had ever been. Her kids had commented on the pep in her step during the time she had tried to keep their relationship on the down low.

He had stolen her heart once again when she told him that she wanted to wait at least six months before she introduced him to her children and he had whole heartily agreed and asked if she wanted to wait longer. She had replied they weren't getting any younger so six months was more than enough time. They'd laughed though she had been worried how her older children would react to him. But her worry had been for naught. All four of her children, particularly her younger two, had loved him from the first
family dinner. Her older two had warmed to him by the end of the evening, once they had gotten over their shock of who her new companion was. She was too old to use the term boyfriend. Her son had cautioned her not to break her companion's heart. She had assured her perceptive son that was not her intent at all and that this man had as much power to hurt her as she him.

That had been the first of many family gatherings her man had sailed through. All his years of being an uncle had kept him well-versed in the kids' world and his job kept him up to date in the happenings of the twenty something world her older children inhabited. He had thanked her for making him a father and grandfather. He had thought he would never have the opportunity.

A year to the day they had become friends, they married in her living room- - now their living room, exchanging vows in front of their children, as he referred to them. Her oldest son was his best man. Her oldest daughter was her maid of honor. Her two youngest were the ring bearer and flower girl, respectively. Her oldest grandson sang a song he wrote himself. The wedding had been simple and breathtakingly beautiful. She knew this was the man she would die with.

He kept dreamin' that someday he'd be a star
But he sho' found out the hard way that dreams don't always come true
So he's pawned all his hopes and he even sold his own car
Bought a one-way ticket back to the life he once knew

"When are you retiring again?" she asked sleepily as he rolled out of bed at some ungodly hour.

"When our youngest is out of college," he replied, heading towards the shower.

She sighed and closed her eyes again. Sometimes she thought his stubborness would be the death of her. From the day they married, he had refused to allow her to use her money or ex's child support money for the kids. He said they were his kids and he took care of his own. He
insisted the money go into a trust fund for when the children were adults. She had surprised both herself and him by not arguing. Instead she had pushed him down on the sofa and had her way with him. She had never been as turned on as she had been when he had made that demand. She was with a man who truly, truly loved her children and thought of them as his. His. This was what she had always wanted.

While she wished their lives were perfect, the class difference reared its head from time to time, along with other issues. They were both older and had to get used to living with someone else again, or in his case living with someone for the first time ever. His friends had been suspicious of her and it had taken time to win them over. To prove he wasn't just some passing fancy to her. But when they finally accepted her, they truly accepted her and fully opened their hearts and homes to her. She had seen the relief on his face when he saw his friends had stopped being polite and started treating her like family. They had accepted the kids, but she had been the last hold out.

"Have a good day at work," she said automatically.

He leaned over the bed and kissed her softly. "The best part of the day is when I return home to you."

"I love you."

"I love you, too."

"Stay safe," they said to each other and he walked out of the room. Their ritual finished until tomorrow. She would be so glad when his friend would return from his honeymoon with wife number five so her husband could return to his normal hours.

Two hours later, just as she had managed to go back to sleep, the call had come. The call that had changed her life forever.

Said he's leavin' on that midnight train to Georgia
Said he's goin' back to find the simpler place and time
I'm gonna be with him on that midnight train to Georgia
I'd rather live in his world than live without him in mine

"Why are we checking here again?" the strawberry blonde asked from the passenger side of the Escalade.

"You know she likes to come out to be with him," the blonde answered.

"You don't think that's creepy?"

"Not if it helps her deal with his death. I'm all for whatever helps bring her out of this depression."

"But I don't think this is a healthy way to deal with it."

"Is that your professional opinion, doctor, or your opinion as a concerned daughter?" the male asked his sister.

"Both," the younger of the two answered. "I'm really worried about her."

"You and me both. I knew she loved him, but- -"

"Exactly." Watching her mother and step-father together had been like nothing she had ever seen before. She hadn't expected the lifelong bachelor to adjust well to family life. But he had taken to it with relish. He had loved his role as husband, step-father, and most especially grandfather. Sadly a drunk driver who refused to pull over had ruined it all and her mother had been inconsolable and still was. They had all taken to keeping a closer eye on her.

"Oh my- -" the man yelled, jumping out of the vehicle.

His sister was right on his heels.

"Mom! Mom!" he yelled as he turned the woman on the ground over. "I don't think she's breathing!"

"Get out the way!" she screamed frantically. She had to keep calm. She had to keep calm. Her mother. Her family depended on it. "Call 911," she ordered, not realizing her brother was already on the phone with them as she began CPR. "I won't lose you, Mom. I won't. You can't leave us. We love you."

Oh he's leavin' on the midnight train to Georgia
Said he's goin' back to find the simpler place and time
I've got to be with him on that midnight train to Georgia
I'd rather live in his world than live without him in mine

The man in the truck thumped his fingers to the beat of the music as he waited for the ambulance and fire department to leave the cemetery. Another fainter at a funeral probably. He wished they would hurry up, his wife's pot roast tasted best right out of the oven. It shouldn’t take him too long to finish the job, as unusual as it was. He didn't get many calls like this one, actually this was his first request to put up the headstone before the actual funeral, but the plot had been dug already so the funeral would be happening in the next few days. He had been hesitant to take the job, but he had been offered four times his quoted price so he had happily said yes. His wife would die when she saw the plane tickets for Paris for the two of them. It had been her lifelong dream to go. This money had put him over the top in his savings. He had actually felt guilty about taking the money and job, yet when he had written down the information; it drove home how important it was to spend time with the people you love because they could be gone in an instant.

Finally it was clear to move ahead. He quickly jumped out of his truck and went to the bed. Uncovering the granite stone, he rechecked the spelling and wording for the millionth time.

Deacon: Admit it. Don't you wonder every day what it would be like if I hadn't messed things up? You tell me right here, right now that you don't think about what it would be like for us to be in love now the way we were? Bridget, with you believing in me, there's nothing I can't do.

Thank you, Logan. Real life caught up with me, along with procrastination so I took a longer than intended break from writing. I'm hoping I'm finally back on the horse. I missed being here.

Simmie,

I should have put a warning in that this story was a bit of a downer. For some reason my song fics have the tendency not to be so happy go lucky.

I'm glad you enjoyed the story though.

I'm left speechless. The moment I knew what was happening, I cried. A well written little diddy, but shockingly sad.

I don't get it! Nick and Ridge are both pigs, why would a fan want Brooke with either one of them?

How I've missed that pacing cat. I'm glad you enjoyed the sad fic. It seems my song fics have the tendency to be a bit sadder than my stories. Thanks for reading and reviewing.
